India batter Suryakumar Yadav may have lost his place in the national T20I squad, but reports suggest the door to an international comeback remains open.

According to sources, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has indicated that the experienced batter could return to the team if he consistently performs in domestic cricket and demonstrates sustained form.

Suryakumar Yadav last represented India in the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup final before being left out of the subsequent T20I squad.

Domestic Cricket Could Be the Key to a Comeback

A report quoting a BCCI source stated that Suryakumar is not currently part of the selectors' immediate plans, but his chances of returning have not been ruled out.

The source reportedly said that regular run-scoring in domestic tournaments would strengthen his case for future selection.

Suryakumar, who represents Mumbai in domestic cricket, is expected to focus on building form at the domestic level before pushing for another opportunity with the national side.

Dropped After Post-World Cup Squad Announcement

Despite leading India during its successful 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup campaign, Suryakumar was omitted from India's squad for the team's post-tournament T20I assignments.

The selectors instead appointed Shreyas Iyer as captain, signalling a new direction for the team's leadership and squad composition.

With the next T20 World Cup scheduled for 2028, Suryakumar faces increased competition for a place in India's plans.

Recent Performances Under Scrutiny

Suryakumar endured an inconsistent run with the bat over the past year, struggling to produce big scores regularly.

Although he showed signs of regaining form during India's T20I series against New Zealand, where he registered multiple half-centuries, his performances during the latter stages of the T20 World Cup were less impactful.

His IPL 2026 campaign for the Mumbai Indians also produced moderate returns, adding pressure on his place in the national squad.
